"It will be my most cherished ambition, my highest endeavor, . . . to increase the numbers of those, whom Cambridge, the great mother of strong men, sends out into the world with cool heads but warm hearts, willing to give at least some of their best powers to grappling with the social suffering around them. ”
Alfred Marshall, The Present Position of Economics (1885)
In a time of increasing global tensions, when polarized narratives seem an inevitability, it is becoming more crucial than ever to take a step back, use data to search for objective truths, and reanimate collective public discourse while intently listening to those with views opposing our own.
This booklet attempts to realize these ideals in several ways. We wish to give participating students the support they need to explore some of our generation’s greatest challenges. This will serve as a first step to enabling them to better participate in conversations regarding the issues impacting them most deeply, perhaps even empowering them to eventually contribute to the solution.
We also hope to make contributions to ongoing academic discourse by sharing their findings, freely. We invite our audience to explore the ideas outlined in this booklet, challenge them constructively in well-thought-out and structured rebuttals, and get inspired to be more informed on the issues with which our generation finds itself grappling. Ultimately, by honouring Alfred Marshall’s most cherished ambition, EconomicSense aims to send more cool-headed and warm-hearted citizens out into the world, addressing the manifold challenges of our time as best they can.
We hope you enjoy the read.
